CELEBRATIONS were held by pupils by a school in Alveston on Thursday as the winners of a year-long house championship were unveiled.

The competition at Marlwood School, which was introduced last year, was won by Berkeley House who prevailed after being awarded more points through the year, from targets focusing on a range of factors including attendance records, accelerated reading and attitudes to learning scores.

Since the championship was introduced and a dose of healthy competition, the school has noticed an increase in both individual and team events, including termly sport competitions, the annual house sports day, and a range of sporting challenges held each Friday.

And to the victors, went the spoils, as the house were treated in the afternoon to a fun fair on the school field, complete with dodgems, bungee trampolines, inflatables, ice creams and more, while the rest of the school spent their time indoors.

The school also invited year five pupils from two partnered primary schools, St Helens and Severn Beach, to join in on the fun with a visit to the school to enjoy the fair, giving them an exciting experience to look forward to when they move on to secondary school.

Marlwood headteacher James Pope, who awarded the house with the championship trophy, said: “This has been a fantastic end to a year of contribution, celebration and competition reflecting the culture and ethos of support and positivity that exists at Marlwood School.

“Everyone is now looking forward to the next academic year as the Championship looks to build all over again, to raise both aspiration and team spirit success.”
