AN OIL spill on the M5 motorway brought today’s morning commute to a standstill, as crews scrambled to clear the way.

The spill, which happened on the northbound carriageway following a collision between junctions 12 and 11A for Gloucester, resulted in the closure of two lanes while contractors from Highways England cleared the road.

Tailbacks formed in all lanes with traffic being affected even beyond the junction 13 for Stroud, but congestion was eased shortly after 9am as the lanes opened again.
