VOLUNTEERS from across South Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire are being sought out to assist in the monitoring of a prison in Falfield.

The Independent Monitoring Board at Eastwood Park prison, which is responsible for keeping an eye on day-to-day prison life, are keen to take on new members to help with their work ensuring prisoners are treated with fairness and justice.

Volunteers are being sought out from all walks of life from within a radius of around 15-20 miles, with a particular interest in recruiting younger people and those from black and ethnic minorities.

Although members are not paid, they do receive expenses for any loss of earnings and mileage allowances.

Board members will have full access to all parts of the prison and can talk to any prisoner, with typical monitoring visits potentially including residential accommodation, kitchens, workshops, class-rooms and the healthcare centre.

They also see prisoners who have asked for help in resolving specific problems. If there is a serious incident at the prison, members attend to monitor the way it is managed.

There is a monthly board meeting to share information, monitor trends and raise issues with the prison governor.

A board spokesman said: “We need good listeners, who are enthusiastic and non-judgmental.

“They need to be good communicators, computer literate, able to work in a team and to relate to prisoners, prison officers and civilian staff.

“The time commitment is around 4 to 5 visits a month, but can be flexible depending on the needs of the board and the individual.”

Those interested in applying, or would like further information, can visit www.imb.org.uk or call 0203 334 3265.

Completed application forms should be sent to imbrecruitment@justice.gsi.gov.uk by October 9.
