GLORIOUS sunny weather brought record numbers to the annual harvest fayre in Tockington on Saturday with hundreds in attendance.

Visitors to the event on Tockington Village Green were treated to entertainment throughout the afternoon with music from Thornbury-based group Ukulele Jam and dance displays from Olveston Rainbows and Brownies, with younger members of the crowd having no shortage of stall games, sweets and toys.

Regulars to the event said that it was the largest crowd in attendance that they had seen since the event was resurrected in the late 1960s as crowds gathered to watch 94-year-old resident Jack Vokes officially open the event.

Mr Vokes then went on to crown the harvest queen, with 14-year-old Jessie Smale being given the honour, while the titles of royal attendants were bestowed on 10-year-olds Olivia Lomax and Sophie Snook, much to the delight of the crowd.

Following the coronation, dozens of children led a parade through the green in fancy dress as popular characters from Roald Dahl books, coinciding with the author’s 100th birthday.

Entries from the children’s art and flower competitions were also on display in the chapel, with judging being done by Elaine Thomas.

With plenty more to do, including a have-a-go hula hooping workshop led by Debbie Maidment, a colourful bouncy castle provided by Thornbury Round Table and the Bristol Methodist Circuit Ark Bus.

Adults were equally provided for with delicious cream teas, raffles, and plenty of bargains from the many stalls.

A spokesman for the organising committee said: “The fayre was above all an amazing afternoon that truly brought a community together and helped continue the traditions of fayres that have been held on this green for centuries.

“The Methodist Church organisers would like to thank all their helpers for their splendid efforts and all who were able to come out and enjoy themselves, making it a fayre to remember. Roll on Harvest Fayre 2017!”
