MP for Thornbury and Yate Luke Hall has spoken out on plans for changes to parliamentary constituencies which would see the area he represents dramatically reshaped.

Under the proposals by the Boundary Commission, Wotton-under-Edge, Berkeley, Cam and Dursley would be included under the current Thornbury and Yate constituency.

Meanwhile, the constituency would lose Frampton Cotterell and the Boyd Valley.

Speaking to the Gazette, Mr Hall, who was elected last year, said: “As a local man who was born and grew up in South Gloucestershire, I am hugely proud to represent my home constituency, and would be sad to lose any part of it.

“However, as in all areas of public life, savings have been made in order to live within our means. Just as South Gloucestershire Council has committed to reducing the number of local councillors, we as MPs must also put our own house in order too.

“When Britain first swept away the system of rotten boroughs we did so in order to promote fairness and restore integrity to our electoral system. In the 21st century, we must do the same again.

“You only have to take a quick look at our parliamentary constituencies to understand that the status quo is simply indefensible.”

The review by the Boundary Commission has outlined changes to the 650 constituencies across the country, which would be reduced to 600.

The proposals are part of a three-month public consultation, ending on December 5.

Mr Hall said: “I encourage everybody who has opinions on these changes to contribute to the consultation.”
