MORE than 4,000 descended on Thornbury’s Mundy Playing Fields for Saturday's bonfire night fireworks display.

Despite the cold, conditions were perfect for the event, with clear skies and no wind, so visitors were treated to an impressive main display as well as a colossal bonfire, a smaller children’s show and the talents of a fire juggler.

Despite collecting and counting still taking place, the group have estimated that more than £20,000 has been raised, which will go to good causes in the area.

Andrew Hunter, the fireworks coordinator, said: “Saturday night was a busy night with so many people in attendance.

“We changed the set-up of the event, moving the bonfire to another area of the field, and as a result, it was a learning curve for us to see if our supporters benefited and enjoyed the event.

“Early feedback is all positive and all seemed to enjoy the event, and everyone who took part in putting this together should be very proud of themselves for pulling it off.

“After putting hundreds of hours into making it happen, the attendance is true testament of the success that the event is, and we are so happy that the event ran smoothly without any hiccups.”

Before the fireworks were released, the Guy was set alight atop the bonfire by Thornbury mayor Cllr Helen Harrison, who was joined by Esther and Bethan Jenkinson, two young representatives from the Thornbury children’s charity Jigsaw.

Cllr Harrison said: “It was a wonderful honour to be involved again with this fantastic event in Thornbury, many thanks to the Round Table and the Rotary Club for all their hard work.

Seeing so many people there enjoying themselves was a great reminder of the wonderful community Thornbury has and I am already looking forward to next year’s display.”

Thornbury Round Table have said they plan to run a Dragon’s Den style event in the near future for groups to present how they would put the money to best use.

Mr Hunter said: “We would really like to thank our main sponsors Dunkley’s Accountants, Lane Pearson automotive and Cadman Wealth Planning for their support in helping to keep prices low and affordable for families.

“But most importantly, we would like to thank everyone who attended, their support is very much appreciated and we are pleased to say that many organisations will be benefitting from their generosity.”
