AN ART exhibition to mark the one-year anniversary of the death of David Bowie is set to open this month in Thornbury.

The week-long exhibition at The Hive art shop will pay tribute to the enigmatic singer, known for regularly reinventing his image throughout his long career, who passed away on January 10, after an 18-month long battle with cancer.

On show will be a range of pieces from artists from Thornbury and Bristol in a variety of art styles, from paintings and acrylic art to glasswork and calligraphy, as well as a collection of pictures and books.

The shop’s owner Honey Pegg, a huge Bowie fan, had finished an amazing bottle cap portrait of the singer only weeks before he died.

“The man was iconic, and while people may associate him with a particular look, he had a million different faces, which really came out in his music,” she said.

“The expressiveness of art is a great way to express all these unique sides he had through the years, and I thought it would be nice after a year to celebrate his work in a different way.

“It is also a good chance to give some local artists the chance to put forward a variety of work with a specific theme.”

While some of the art and books will be on display from private collections, some pieces will also be for sale.

Artist Nicola Latham, who will have work at the exhibition, said: “It is an opportunity to remember the great man and pull local artists together to get creative and explore new ideas and techniques they might not normally use.”

Honey added: “If people don’t know much about David Bowie and the incredible work he has produced over the years, hopefully the exhibition and everything we will have on show will give them the opportunity to learn a little more.”

The exhibition at The Hive will run from Saturday, January 7 to Saturday, January 14.
