A FILM company from Yate is celebrating the history of aviation in South Gloucestershire with the launch of its latest documentary “Wings Over Filton”.

The 104-minute film by 1st Take Films covers the history of Filton Airfield and the aircraft that were built and based there from 1916 to 2010, including the world-famous supersonic jet Concorde.

Taking nine weeks to put together, the film uses a wealth of previously unused archive footage, including a range of 18mm and 35mm film, and what is believed to be the first footage of Concorde moving around the runway under its own power in 1968.

“We are really pleased with it,” said producer Andy Warren of the company’s latest project.

“We set out for this film to offer a complete overview of the amazing flying machines, built tested and flown from Filton, and the history of flying in South Gloucestershire, and we feel we have really achieved that.

“When you reflect on the achievements of the region’s achievements in the field, it makes you proud that Sir George White set up the Bristol Airplane Company in 1910 – a family business that produced this incredible legacy”

Featuring footage of the fastest and the largest planes to be produced in Filton, the film also show the first aircraft ever to cross the Atlantic with 100 people and the first to be built from stainless steel.

“We never want the airfield at Filton to be forgotten,” said Andy. “While it isn’t coming back, we never want what was achieved on that runway to be lost.”

The two-disc Wings Over Filton film costs £14.95 and is available by calling 01454 321614, on www.1st-take.com or from Chipping Sodbury Post Office and Waterstones stores in Cribbs Causeway and Broadmead.

Donations from the profits of the film will be made to the fundraising project for the Concorde Museum in Filton.
