ALMONDSBURY Parish Council will decide tonight whether to expel one of their councillors following a controversial tweet that has been labelled as a “hate incident”.

The tweet from UKIP Cllr Philip Winter, which has since been deleted, said: “We had same organised Communism by darkies former Empire at Oxford! Cecil Rhodes statue is still their [sic]!! I would deport buggers."

The slur from the councillor, in response to a tweet from Yale University in America, caused a great deal of backlash, with South Gloucestershire Council having reported it to police, who have said it has been recorded as a hate incident.

The discussion to take place at tonight’s meeting of Almondsbury Parish Council comes follows a resolution put forward by vice-chairman Cllr John Calver, which was seconded by chairman Cllr Phil Hall.

The resolution states: “This council finds racist comments made by Councillor Winter totally disgraceful, and wishes to make it clear that Almondsbury Parish Council strongly deplores discriminatory behaviour in any shape or form.

“In the light of this behaviour, we request that Philip Winter stands down as a councillor for this Parish.”
