LOOKING back on some of the stories the Gazette has reported through the years...

February 1997

REVISED plans for a decked carpark and extension to Safeway supermarket in Thornbury were met with opposition from town councillors in 1992.

The plans would mean that the store extension would be reduced by 804sq ft, with two more loading bays and more landscaping.

Town councillors feared that the proposed changes would be “visually intrusive” and attract vandalism, nuisance and crime.

SEVERAL burglaries took place at a number of schools in the Dursley area during February 1997.

The door of Slimbridge Primary School was forced in a break-in on Monday night, although nothing appeared to have been taken according to a police spokesman Sgt Chris Spry.

A computer, television set and disc drive worth a total of £500 were stolen from Berkeley Primary School after a window was forced open.

North Nibley Primary school also reported the theft of cash and a video recorder were stolen.

RATS were spotted by concerned residents outside a supermarket in Yate in February 2007.

Sightings of vermin were reported by numerous shoppers at the Tesco Express.

Store management released an apology and said that they were working to increase rubbish collection and secure thrown-out food.
