AGE is no barrier to becoming a successful apprentice, is the message from an employee at electricity distributor Western Power Distribution (WPD).

28-year-old Michael Broadhead was working in the renewable energy sector, when he decided to apply for a WPD apprenticeship.

With the tenth National Apprenticeship Week beginning on March 6, Michael wants to encourage those who would like to be an apprentice to not be deterred by their age.

He said: “I was worried I’d be the oldest on the course but I needn’t have been.

"There’s a broad range of ages and we build good bonds with each other from the beginning.”

He added that he enjoys working for the electricity provider: “In my previous job, I occasionally worked with people from WPD and I’d always been struck by how they presented themselves and how highly they talked about the company.”

Michael, who works as a fitter, joined the WPD scheme in September 2015 and is scheduled to complete his apprenticeship by the end of the year.

His apprenticeship has included a 13-week initial training programme and studying for City & Guilds Level 2 and 3 Maths qualifications.
