AN INSPIRATIONAL six-year-old girl from Tortworth who decided to take part in a charity run for her grandfather has finished, raising £1,200.

Isla Wigmore, who goes to Christ the King Primary School in Thornbury, signed up to the Race for Life in Gloucester after telling her mother, Sarah, she wanted to run for her ‘Grampy’ Steve Preston, who is currently undergoing treatment for lung cancer, to “get him the medicine he needs”

The impressive sum, which includes Gift Aid, is being donated to Cancer Research UK.

No stranger to cancer, Isla also ran after her father, Andrew, beat skin cancer in 2015, and her great-grandmother sadly passing away from lung cancer in the same year.

Her mum, Sarah, told the Gazette that on the start line of the race, her daughter had said she was “very scared” and that her heart was beating very fast, but the brave girl held her nerve and ran the 5km race in Gloucester, completing it in 53 minutes, with her family on the sidelines shouting their support.

During the course of the run, Isla was heard to shout “I’m beating cancer!” and at one point, Steve even joined Isla to support her race, following her on his scooter for encouragement.

“Isla did us all proud,” said Sarah, who ran the course with her daughter.

“What she has achieved and completed is beyond what we could have imagined.

“There were a few tears at the beginning and the end of the race as pride overwhelmed all of us. She could not wait to get her medal at the end. It was a truly well-deserved medal in my eyes.”
