TWO young sisters from Thornbury have raised nearly £500 for charity after organising a sponsored walk along the Cornish coast.

Eight-year-old Hollie Davies and her six-year-old sister Isabel walked an impressive seven miles, starting at Mount Edgcumbe House, and heading down the Rame Head Heritage Coast to Kingsand, before coming back again, to raise money for the National Deaf Children’s Society.

Joined by their cousins Henry, Sam, and Hamish, as well as their grandparents, the sisters, who go to St Mary’s Primary School in Thornbury, said they wanted to take on the challenge for the charity after Hollie was saved from temporary deafness last year by having grommet surgery last year.

She said: “Isabel and I came up with the idea to put our sponsor money towards the National Deaf Children’s Society after I kept finding it hard to hear at school and needed grommets.”

Speaking about the walk, Isabel said they had a really fun day, with lots of snacks, including an ice cream.

She said: “At Kingsand we played on the beach and we went on a small ferry to get to our starting point where the ferryman gave us all our fares free if we put that money into our sponsor money as well which we did.

“People even gave us money along the way which was fun and kept us going. All children should do this as it was a lot of fun and we learnt a lot about raising money and a charity.”

Hanna Chambers at the National Deaf Children’s Society said: “It’s absolutely fantastic that Hollie and Isabel have helped to support our work by doing this brilliant sponsored walk.

“There are over 50,000 deaf children in the UK, and it’s because of the generosity of people like Hollie and Isabel that we’re able to continue improving their lives and giving them a brighter future.”
