THORNBURY has illuminated itself with a festive glow as thousands turned out to celebrate the Christmas lights switch on.

Crowds flocked to Thornbury High Street for this year's event, with families and friends enjoying the sights, sounds and fun of the fun fair.

Switching on the lights this year was YouTube sensation Jodie Mellor, who was joined by Thornbury residents Ella and Annie Sharp after their grandmother won a competition to have the honour and nominated them in her stead.

Ella and Annie, 14 and 12, said: "We are really excited to turn the Christmas lights on and very grateful that our Nanny nominated us to switch them on in her place!"

After the lights came on, Ms Mellor entertained the crowds with two songs from her latest EP, and music continued throughout the rest of the festivities.

Collections were also made throughout the night by staff and volunteers of nominated charity Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC), with mascot Charlie the Bear also meeting young visitors.

Thornbury Christmas Lights committee chairman Brian Roberts said: "We really want to thank the people of Thornbury and surrounding villages for supporting the Christmas Lights switch on again this year, and are very pleased to welcome Great Western Air Ambulance as our nominated charity."

Holly Adlem from GWAAC added: "We are thrilled to have been chosen as the charity this year as all donations help us to keep the air ambulance flying."
