WINTERBOURNE International Academy and The Castle School in Thornbury have topped the tables in South Gloucestershire for GCSE results, statistics released today have shown.

The two academy schools came top in the percentage of pupils achieving the standard of grade 5 in English and Maths – a high C grade in old money - with 56 and 55 per cent respectively.

As a whole, schools across England achieved an average of 39.6 per cent, with South Gloucestershire marginally below on 39.5 per cent.

State-funded schools in England performed slightly better with an average of 46.3 per cent of pupils achieving the standard.

Others in South Gloucestershire to come above the national average were Marlwood School (50 per cent), Brimsham Green School (49 per cent), Downend School (47 per cent) and John Cabot Academy (44 per cent).

A full table of schools from across South Gloucestershire - minus special schools- can be seen below.

Statistics released last year by the Department for Education have now been updated, ranking schools across the country in terms of attainment using the Progress 8 and Attainment 8 scores.

Progress 8 scores the difference in a pupil’s grade between the end of Key Stage 2 (aged 11) and the end of Key Stage 4 (aged 16) compared to pupils across England who achieved similar results in up to eight subjects at the end of Key Stage 2.

This achieves a score between -1 and 1, which are split in to bands of above average, average, below and well below.

Bradley Stoke Community School (0.16) and The Castle School (0.06) were the only two rated above average in Progress 8, with South Gloucestershire as a whole being rated -0.31.

Attainment 8 ranks pupils by how well they performed in up to eight topics, with a score out of 80, with The Castle School topping the table with 52.2, far exceeding the national average of 44.6 and South Gloucestershire’s average of 43.7.

Also performing highly were Winterbourne International Academy and Bradley Stoke Community School who achieved 49.4 and 48.7.

Also above average were Marlwood School in Alveston (46.7), Brimsham Green School (46.4) and John Cabot Academy (44.9).

Percentages of pupils remaining in education or entering employment was above the national state-funded school average of 94 per cent, with 95 per cent in South Gloucestershire and only one school, King’s Oak Academy, below 90 percent.
