A GOOD deed is a good deed, however big or small, and these should be actively encouraged wherever possible.

Take the “Suspended Coffees” initiative being taken on by Hawkes House in Thornbury. The premise is that someone can buy an extra cup for a £2 donation – less than the cost of a normal cup – which in turn will go on to make someone’s day a little brighter.

It’s a simple idea, easy to manage, and it encourages the community to consider doing someone they don’t know a favour. Brilliant.

But then there are always people who look for the negative, as has been seen since this story was posted on social media.

These people are quick to say things like “this only helps the place selling the coffee” and “why aren’t they just giving the coffee away” – frankly these point are not only petty and disappointing, they are quite ridiculous.

The initiative is about promoting good will, and there is still a business to run. If you believe cups of coffee should be given away for free, when was the last time you bought one for a stranger?
