A PRIMARY school in Alveston is celebrating receiving positive praise following an “outstanding” inspection from the Church of England.

St Helen’s CofE Primary School was visited on March 13 for the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) report, with inspectors giving the school the highest possible grade.

The school, which has 208 students, received a “Good” rating when it was last inspected in 2013.

In the report, inspector Patricia Morris praised the school for its Christian ethos and welcoming atmosphere, which she said “is immediately apparent on entering the school”, adding that “where every child feels nurtured and valued as an individual, encourages children to express their thoughts with confidence and to know that their opinions will be valued”.

She continued to say that “Christian values are deeply embedded and permeate every part of school life” with the school’s 12 core values at the heart of the school, making a positive impact on the children’s lives and achievements.

Head teacher Andy Spens was praised for his “dedicated and inspirational leadership” which is supported by experienced and committed governors and staff, ensuring “an exceptionally clear vision is continually moving the school forward as a church school”.

Earlier this academic year, the school formed a link with a developing school in Uganda. In the report it was suggested that the bond should be embedded within St Helen’s to “further develop the children’s appreciation of Christianity as a multi-cultural world faith.

Welcoming the outstanding praise, Mr Spens said: “It is great to reflect the hard work of the community. It is a joint effort of the church, the congregation, the children and the staff.

“We are really proud of the school already but to have this officially recognised is fantastic.”

The report also highlighted an “excellent partnership with local churches” being of considerable benefit to the children.

Revd David Moss said: “I think the school is outstanding already, but to have someone come in and tell them that is the icing on the cake.

“They have worked hard as a team to get the school to where it is now and for that to be recognised by others means so much.”
