HEAVY rain has caused more difficulties for motorists across South Gloucestershire.

A couple had to be rescued from their car near Wickwar on Saturday when they became trapped in nearly a foot of flood water.

The Saab car they were travelling in on the B4059, near to the junction with the B4058 Wotton Road, ran into trouble at around 11.45am.

A fire crew from Gloucester was dispatched to the scene, where a local farmer was lending a hand with his Landrover vehicle, and helped get the man and woman to safety.

Meanwhile, a main road out of Chipping Sodbury was closed over the Christmas period following heavy rainfall.

Wickwar Road, from the High Street to the mini roundabout with St John’s Way, was shut to traffic entering the town for over a week from Christmas Eve.

South Gloucestershire Council said the partial closure was due to flooding.

A spokeswoman said: “StreetCare staff are currently on site investigating the cause of the flood and a clean up operation is underway.

“The road will be fully reopened as soon as possible. We are continuing to monitor the situation.”
