ORGANISERS of a charity cricket match are hoping it will be third time lucky for the event to go ahead this weekend in memory of a popular policeman.

The annual Chris Beardwell memorial match has been rescheduled to take place this Sunday, August 17 (2pm) after two previous attempts to play the game were hampered by torrential rain.

The event, at Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club, remembers Mr Beardwell, a beat officer who served the area, who died five years ago aged 70.

As well as his policing career, he was well known as a cricket player and umpire in the local community and after his death, his widow Trizia and son Matthew set up the memorial cup to honour him and raise money for different charities each year.

The match was originally due to take place on August 1 and was then postponed until last Sunday (August 10) but that had to be cancelled because of the bad weather.

The family said it was confident the match would take place this Sunday. There will also be children’s entertainment, a barbecue and charity raffle in aid of the Children’s Hospice South West. All are welcome.
