WINTERBOURNE International Academy has received a top award from the British Council.

The school has been recognised for excellence in international learning, with the council saying it had helped bring the world into the classroom.

The council is the UK's biggest global organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations.

Its International School Award is given to schools and other educational establishments which forge overseas links and add an international dimension to their curriculum.

It said through working on joint projects, students and teachers were given a fresh perspective on the world and their place in it.

Pupils discovered more about schools in other parts of the world, as well as different countries and cultures, while being prepared for living and working in the global economy.

Teaching standards were also improved through the sharing of best practice and teaching methods.

British Council spokesman John Rolfe said: "The academy’s fantastic international work has rightfully earned this prestigious award.

"The International School Award is a great chance for schools to demonstrate the important work they’re doing to bring the world into their classrooms.

"Adding an international dimension to children’s education ensures that they are truly global citizens and helps prepare them for successful future careers in an increasingly global economy."
