FIGURES published this week have revealed that the Thornbury and Yate constituency has the lowest rate of child poverty in the South West.

The Campaign to End Child Poverty has published a new report that provides a child poverty map of the whole of the country including a full data set showing the child poverty rate for every ward, local authority and constituency in the South West.

Bristol West, Plymouth Moor View and Plymouth Sutton and Devonport are the three constituencies with the highest rate of child poverty in the region at 29 per cent.

Thornbury and Yate, along with North Somerset, was revealed to have the lowest rate at 13 per cent.

The percentage of children living in poverty in the Filton and Bradley Stoke constituency was 15 per cent whilst the percentage in Stroud was higher at 18 per cent.

Sixteen per cent of children in The Cotswolds constituency, which includes Wotton-under-Edge, were living in poverty, according to the figures.

David Holmes, chairman of the Campaign, said: “These figures reveal just how widely and deeply child poverty reaches into our communities, even those areas generally regarded as well off.

“Far too many children whose parents are struggling to make a living are suffering as a result and missing out on the essentials of a decent childhood that all young people should be entitled to.

"We can and must do better for our children.

“Poverty ruins childhoods and reduces life chances.

"Failing to invest properly in children is a false economy: already child poverty costs the UK £29billion each year and in the long run taxpayers will foot an even higher bill for correcting the damage.

“We are calling on politicians of all parties to urgently set out a clear roadmap towards ending child poverty which includes the additional actions needed and the measures by which progress will be tracked."
