PRIMARY school pupils learned about the significance of food banks in Yate during a Harvest Festival assembly.

St Mary’s Primary School held an assembly on Friday, 10th October to celebrate the Harvest Festival and educate the children about food banks in the area.

The whole school was involved with 315 pupils celebrating by performing poetry, songs and staging plays in their year groups.

Reverend Ian Wallace from the church visited the children and Bob Callicott, from a local food bank, gave a speech about the importance of the food donated by the pupils.

Year 1 teacher, Rachel Hill, said: “The staff enjoyed the day too. It was a really good day as the children could understand the significance of families using food banks in Yate and what it meant for them to be donating. It went very well.

“We celebrate the Harvest Festival every year and we were lucky to have the Reverent visit to do a prayer about the day.”

The Harvest Festival is a worldwide celebration of food grown on the land.
