A NEW booklet about the impact of the First World War on the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area has been published.

Written by Lorna Brooks, who volunteers at Yate Heritage Centre, it covers each element of life during the Great War.

The book - First World War in Yate and Sodbury - is now on sale at the heritage complex in Church Road for £3.95.

David Hardill, the community heritage officer, said: "It is ideal both for people with a general interest in the subject and those interested in their local history."

Copies can be bought at the centre but copies will be made available to all the local schools.

Contributions towards the cost of the book came from Yate, Sodbury and South Gloucestershire councils, as well as the Heritage Lottery Fund.

A total of £3,250 in lottery money was awarded to the centre to help Yate mark the centenary of the outbreak of the war 100 years ago.

It covered a number of events, including an exhibition on the history of Yate and Sodbury people during the conflict, and the book project.

The war made a big difference to Yate, bringing modern industry to the area, including factories with dominated the town throughout the 20th century.
