ONE of Avon and Somerset police's four-legged Force family members will be trotting off into retirement tomorrow (October 30).

Thomas the 12 year old Police horse is officially retiring from service after six years as the long face of the Force.

The Irish Draft Bay Gelding arrived at Avon and Somerset police from the Isle of Wight as a six year old and was trained by PC Darryl Snow before being passed onto PC Kath Pitman who remained with Thomas for his entire career as a Police horse.

Without coming directly from the horse’s mouth, the highlight of Thomas’ career is likely to have been his three week tour at the 2012 London Olympics.

During the event, he visited many of the capital’s sights and had regular patrols around the Olympic Village.

He was also a regular at the Bath and West Show where he would often showcase his softer side by taking part in the musical ride around the main arena.

PC Pitman said: “Thomas is a lovely, happy chap who is a pleasure to be around.

“He has a lust for life and seeks attention from anyone he comes across.

“He has been so easy to work with over the past few years and has made my role so much more enjoyable.

“He will be sorely missed but at least he will be going home back to the Isle of Wight to graze out for the rest of his days.”

In addition to the major events he has attended, Thomas has been regularly used for patrols in the area.

Thomas will be replaced by a new police horse currently called Trinity who will be officially named at a later date.
