POPPIES have been knitted in memory of each person from Yate who gave their life during the First World War.
An ongoing memorial in the town will be decorated with handmade poppies over the next four years to commemorate the dates of individual deaths during the Great War.

The memorial was erected at St Mary’s Church and women have been crocheting and knitting personalised poppies in remembrance.
The handmade poppies will continue to be added to the memorial by members of the community on the 100th anniversary of each death.
The display was inspired by Cllr Chris Willmore, who said: “We thought it would be a fitting tribute to remember those who lost their lives 100 years ago as each individual poppy represents each individual person.
“Three poppies have been placed on the memorial so far. People in the town like the idea and have shown an interest in making a poppy. Ladies from the church, a craft circle and others, so around half a dozen in total have knitted poppies.”
Everyone is welcome to make a poppy for the memorial, and to dedicate a poppy to a relative who made the ultimate sacrifice, or donate anonymously.
A total of 32 poppies are needed to complete the display and the church welcomes all donations of hand crafted poppies. Any excess poppies will be used to complete a wreath which will be laid at the Lych Gate in 2018.
Cllr Willmore added: “I think it is important to remember every single person who died, each was a person with a life and sometimes in the grand numbers of War we forget that each individual was a person.
“The poppies are not enclosed at the moment so we don’t know how long they will last, but in a way if they are left to rot it can be seen as symbolic of the deaths, so we may let them.”
