CHILDREN from a nursery in Yate hand delivered a hamper full of donations they have been collecting to the town’s food bank.

Children and their parents from Little Acorns Nursery collected donations over October and November to support the Yate and Chipping Sodbury food bank.

The 12 children, aged between three and four, walked down to the food bank with staff on Tuesday, November 25 to donate the hamper and share their collected items.

Nursery manager Verity Hayes said: “We put up a sign at the nursery asking parents to help and lots were great in bringing in lots of different things to donate, like pasta, rice, tinned food and toiletries like tissues and razors.

“It’s the first time we have collected for the food bank and it’s an excellent facility which has supported some of the parents here who have used it , so we wanted to help.”

The Yate and Chipping Sodbury food bank, on Station Road, has seen an increase in children and adult users over the last two years, with five times as many people visiting the facility for three days’ emergency food this year compared to 2012.

The nursery, in St Paul’s School Sunridge Park, offers child care for children aged up to five-years-old.

Ms Hayes added: “I think we did really well in collecting for the food bank as we are a small nursery and the children learnt a lot about giving and helping in the community, and they all had a really good time."

The Yate and Chipping Sodbury food bank is open on Tuesdays between 2pm and 4pm and on Fridays, between 10am and 12pm.
