AN EXTRAVAGENT Christmas light display at a Chipping Sodbury shop worker’s home raised £100 for charity.

Bernice Box, who lives in Warmley, decorated her house to raise funds for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

Mrs Box, who is a Blakemore Retail employee at the SPAR store on the high street, decorates her house in aid of charity every year and her 2014 display was her biggest yet.

The display of lights, big inflatables including a giant snow globe with a snowman and Father Christmas at her home on Howes Close ran from Saturday, December 6 and Mrs Box took down the decorations at the start of January.

She raised £100 through donations made via a collection bucket in her garden.

Mrs Box said: “The NSPCC is our nominated charity and every year we try to raise as much money as we can through a variety of activities in store.

“This year we decided to take it to the next level and go all out to produce a fantastic display and raise money for a good cause at the same time.

“Our local community was really generous in their support for such a worthwhile cause.”

Money raised by the Christmas lights extravaganza will support the NSPCC’s ChildLine Schools Service, a ground-breaking service which has been set up to give primary school children the awareness they need to recognise abuse, and to seek help sooner.

Maribeth Lloyds, NSPCC corporate partnerships fundraising manager, said: “We can’t thank Bernice enough for all her efforts in this amazing fundraising activity. Her creativity and ingenuity clearly captured people’s imaginations and inspired them to donate.

“Every penny raised will really help us keep children safe from harm, giving them a brighter, happier future.”

SPAR has been working in partnership with the NSPCC since 2006 and has raised over £4 million to support the charity’s services, which help many thousands of children and young people every year.

As part of this, Blakemore Retail have raised more than £1.9 million for the charity through a range of activities including a sponsored cycle, Mount Snowdon sponsored walk and a five a side football competition.
