A YATE charity is turning 10-years-old and is urging people to get involved with its weekend fund-raiser to celebrate.

Yate Relay for Life is encouraging people to enter its fund-raising event which will take place between Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5.

The event, which started in 2006, aims to support Cancer Research UK by bringing together family and friends in teams

Teams of between eight to 15 people, of all ages and levels of fitness will participate over the weekend at the Yate Outdoor Sports Centre.

Team members will take it in turns to walk round a track while everyone else enjoys a wide range of fun activities on offer. As Relay For Life is nonstop through the night, those team members not on the track can take turns to rest, eat, or sleep in their tents which are set up in the centre of the track.

Participants are asked to raise as much money as possible in the months leading up to the relay through a wide range of fundraising activities and securing donations from friends, families and work colleagues for charity.

Helene Craddock, volunteer chairman of Yate Relay For Life, said: “Relay For Life is a great way to spend time with your friends, family and colleagues while raising money for a truly worthwhile cause.”

“Thanks to the support of our past participants the Yate relay has helped make sure that one in two people survive cancer and now we are urging everyone to join us for our 10th birthday to help Cancer Research make sure everyone survives cancer.

“Taking part in Relay For Life is about being part of a community united in the belief that it can make a difference and help beat cancer.

“We need you to join us for a fantastic weekend in July to celebrate life, remember loss and beat cancer.”

Money raised through Yate Relay For Life funds the work of thousands of scientists, doctors and nurses who are dedicated to saving more lives by preventing, controlling and curing all cancers.

The event, with the theme ‘10th birthday bash’, is free to enter with all proceeds going towards Cancer Research and a full programme will be released in June.
