THE cost of cancelling the contract with Urbaser Balfour Beatty to build an incinerator at Javelin Park could amount to £100m.

The figures were released yesterday after Labour and the Lib Dems repeated their September request to have access to the confidential information.

Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Cllr. Jeremy Hilton said: “We have seen the figures for exiting the waste incinerator contract with UBB and it is astronomical. The figures quoted are between £60m and £100m, which is far greater than the £33 million quoted for cancelling a similar contract in Norfolk.

“Labour has acted irresponsibly in calling to cancel this contract before knowing these costs. The Conservatives were reckless in signing such a rigid contract before the planning committee had even considered the application.”

On Friday, January 16 the Labour Party demanded that the Tories cancel GSS’s contract with UBB to build an incinerator at Javelin Park. Calling for an extraordinary meeting, they want to hold a vote to halt the council’s contract with the builder.

Last week Labour Parliamentary candidate David Drew said: “Pushing ahead to build the incinerator would be a big mistake. It is the wrong technology in the wrong place.”
