CHIPPING Sodbury Town Hall will be host to a musical evening with performances from a male choir in aid of a charity that supports disadvantaged widows around the world.

The event will take place on Saturday, February 7 in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall where the Maesteg and District Male Choir will perform with a guest soprano.

The Chipping Sodbury Lions Club has organised the musical event to raise money for an appeal through The Loomba Foundation charity, to help widows in poor countries around the world.

Ian Gott, from the Chipping Sodbury Lions Club, said: “Although all the money raised goes to charity this is also a fantastic opportunity for all the community to listen to the superb sounds of a brilliant male voice choir.

“Normally we give help and cash to the needy in the area some to local charities, however, at the moment, we are collecting for an appeal to help widows in poor countries around the world by buying them a sewing machine.

“It costs just £50 to buy and train the widow, each one has on average three dependents.

“Lions clubs in the UK and Ireland have developed a partnership with the Loomba Foundation so for every £50 we donate they double it and as part of the agreement Lions Clubs International Foundation double this to £200.

“So for every £50 of the profit from the event, four sewing machines will be donated to widows in poor countries which dramatically changes the lives of at least 16 people.”

The club has members from all over the area including Kingswood, Saltford, Badminton and Bradley Stoke and meets twice a month to organise social and fund-raising events such as the charity choir evening.

The event will start at 7pm in the town hall, and after the main performance an informal session will be held where the choir and soloists will sing until late in the evening.

Tickets are £8 and are available from Penny Farthings gift shop in Chipping Sodbury High Street or call Eric on 01454 319231.

The Loomba Foundation launched the charitable scheme ‘empowering widows using sewing machines’ with a target of helping 10,000 women by promoting the welfare and economic empowerment of disadvantaged widows and education of their children.
