A HOME in Winterbourne Down was left badly damaged after a lightning strike caused a fire to break out in the roof.

Four fire engines from Kingswood, Yate and Patchway fire stations were called to reports of a roof fire at the detached property in Bury Hill at 9.20pm on Monday, February 23.

Once on scene crews found the property well alight and immediately began tackling the blaze.

Four firefighters in breathing apparatus used hose reels and a main jet to control the fire. Extensive fire damage was caused to the roof, while water damage was caused throughout the house by the firefighting.

Everyone inside the property at the time of the fire managed to escape safely before crews arrived.
