A DOG lover from Yate raised over £200 during a charity marathon for a leading animal rescue charity.

Jon Williams, 47, ran the Vitality Bath Half Marathon on Sunday, March 1 in aid of charity Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE).

Mr Williams chose to support the leading greyhound rescue charity in England and Wales, which is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of greyhounds and lurchers, by running the half marathon which covered a 13.1 miles course along the River Avon.

Mr Williams said: “About 18 months ago we homed a beautiful black greyhound called Ruby.

“Seeing her now, settled and stretching out happily across our laps or chasing and playing with other dogs up the field is a joy to watch.

“Sadly so many of these gentle dogs will go their whole lives without ever getting the affection or love they deserve.

“The race was tough though I managed to keep a good steady pace.

"I felt exhausted afterwards but being greeted by a group of waggy tailed homeseeking hounds at the finish line made it all feel worthwhile.

"I have now reached over £200 since completing the race.

"All the money raised will go to GRWE to help rescue and re-home abandoned greyhounds and lurchers and hopefully one day they can also 'do a Ruby."

GRWE takes the dogs in need from members of the public, veterinary surgeries and dog wardens.
