STUDENTS in Winterbourne donned aprons over their uniforms to take on a Ready Steady Cook challenge in preparation for university life.

The group of 140 year 13 students from Winterbourne Sixth Form Centre at Winterbourne International Academy, took part in the cooking challenge over three days, on March 10, 12 and 17 to help practise their cooking skills in preparation for university.

The event was sponsored by Marshfield Bakery, in Dyrham, and each group of students were given £5 each to prepare a meal for four people to include two of their 5-a-day.

The challenge was introduced by head of sixth form Emma Kirby as part of the PHSE programme which was designed to get students to think about budgeting and healthy eating.

Some of the winning meals included home made chicken and leek pie and quorn spaghetti bolognaise.
Mrs Kirby said: "I'm really pleased with how enthusiastic the students were about this challenge.

Some were clearly already experienced cooks while others were very new to it but there were certainly some very tasty meals created that I had the pleasure of trying.

"It's a perfect opportunity for them to practise their culinary skills before going off to university in six months time."
