A FATHER and daughter from Yate are taking on a 65 mile hike around the Isle of Wight in aid of Alzheimer’s Society.

Michael Brooks, 47, from Hampden Close in Yate, and his daughter Charlotte, 23, are attempting the Isle of Wight ‘Ultra Challenge’ over the weekend of May 2 and 3, to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Society.

The challenge is a 65 mile hike around the islands coastline, which Mr Brooks and his daughter are aiming to complete in around 30 hours, all without sleep, with a fundraising target of £1,000.

Local prospective MP Luke Hall has been helping Michael’s fundraising efforts.

Mr Brooks said: “My father recently died of the illness and with Yate also becoming a dementia friendly town I felt I could help by raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society, in the hope of slowing down the onset and eventually finding a cure, as people are living longer the cost for care in the future will rocket unless we can cure it.

"I have known Luke for some time and have been impressed by his passion and plans for the local area, especially his work with the Alzheimer’s Society.”

Mr Hall, who is also running a Dementia Friend event with Mr Brooks on Friday, April 2 from 1pm to 2pm at the Shire Way Community Association, said: “I am right behind Mike and Charlotte’s fund-raising efforts, and I am sure they will finish the challenge.

"Many local people know a family member of friend who has been affected by Alzheimer’s, and I will do all I can to help locally.”

Alzheimer's Society staff and volunteers provide both information and services to people affected by dementia in their communities including day care and home care for people with dementia, as well as support and befriending services to help partners and families cope with the demands of caring.
