A NURSE who works for the Macmillan Acute Oncology Service for the North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) has been recognised and highly commended at a national awards ceremony.

Michelle Samson, Macmillan lead acute oncology haematology nurse at NBT was a runner up in the BJN Oncology Nurse of the Year category at the prestigious British Journal of Nursing awards in London on Friday, March 20.

Michelle’s nurse-led acute service has developed excellent relationships with the emergency department and acute assessment units. In the first year the service has provided support for 687 new patients, with 489 follow up visits.

Michelle said: “I was thrilled to be shortlisted and it was great to be part of a special night celebrating all that is good in nursing- it was very inspirational.”

National professional awards such as these raise the profile and understanding of how nursing is at the centre of patient care.

Maggie Crowe, Macmillan development manager for Bristol said: “I am delighted that Michelle has been recognised for her work in this hotly contested category.

“Being a finalist and runner up in a celebration of nursing professionals across the country is a testament to the impact of her work.

“She has gone above and beyond to reach and improve the lives of people affected by cancer and it is only right that this is celebrated.”
