CHILDREN can enjoy a revamped play area in Hillesley after grants and fund-raising totalled over £2,500 towards replacing broken swings and making much-need major improvements.

The refurbishment of the village's much-loved play area started at the end of March and was completed by the Easter holidays, following funds being raised and grants being collected towards the work.

The money was raised with help from the Hillesley field committee, a group of residents who regularly carry out events to help raise funds for the upkeep and maintenance of the playing field, play area, cricket pavilion and village hall.

Lucy Lee, 39, Hillesley field committee secretary, said: "The Hillesley play area was starting to look very run down as one swing was broken and the wooden frame had started to rot and fall apart.

"With the help of the Children's Activity Fund grant scheme from Gloucestershire County Council and the Gloucestershire Community Foundation, Red Nose Day Community cash 2015, we were able to raise enough money to fully replace the swings.

"We received £1,318 in total, approximately half of what the total cost came to and the rest came from fund-raising.

"The committee holds regular clean up days and as the Field was left in trust to the village we therefore, we have a duty to ensure that we make this area a pleasurable place for children to play and explore.

"We now have a fabulous new addition of a nest swing along with two other traditional swings.

"This contribution has helped ensure that the children of the village have an improved play experience and encourages them to play outside more."
