A POPULAR leisure club celebrated its 30th anniversary at an event hosted by the centre in Yate it has supported for three decades.

Members of the 50+ Leisure Club who meet at Yate Leisure Centre came together to celebrate its 30th birthday on Wednesday, May 6.

Yate Town Councillor Wully Perks also attended the event, with over 40 members of the club, as former Mayor of the town up until last week.

Chairman of the club, Brian Lugg, said: “The club was founded sometime in March 1985, and we had already celebrated its 30th anniversary but the Leisure Centre offered to also put this event together.

“It was a great event with live music and refreshments provided by the centre, as we have supported them for the last 30 years, holding our meetings there, so it was a way they could show their appreciation.

“It was a good way of promoting the club and what we do, we have a varied programme which includes line-dancing, bingo and inviting entertainers along to the centre.

“On behalf of the 50+ Leisure Club I want to say a big thank you to the club for throwing the event.”

Cllr Perks said: "‘It was an excellent afternoon at Yate Leisure Centre celebrating the 30th Anniversary with the 50+ Leisure Club.

"It's tremendous to know that life doesn’t end at 50 and that it can be new beginnings with line dancing, bingo, sequence dancing, short bowling and numerous other activities.

"The club is a wonderful way of bringing people together, but it would be nice to see more men join."

Mr Lugg added: “We have around 95 members at the moment and new members are welcome to come along when we meet on Wednesdays between 2pm and 4pm. If you wish to come along, or for more information, call me on , if they contact me in advance on 01454 318194.”
