NEARLY £3,000 was raised for a school in Hawkesbury Upton during an annual run fund-raiser.

The Hawkesbury Upton 5K saw nearly 300 runners line up at Hawkesbury Upton Primary School, at High Street, on Saturday, June 20.

The race, organised entirely by volunteers, returned for its fourth year in aid of the school.

Race committee member Vicky Pember said: “The race went really well this year.

“We had around 280 runners take part, a record number of runners, and raised almost £3,000 for the school and thousands for other charities too including Bristol Children's Hospital and local Brownie and Guide groups.

"We had a new course record with the winner coming in at 17 minutes and 54 seconds.

"It was a brilliant day and brought the whole community together - the run is organised by volunteers and on Saturday we had over 30 volunteers from our small community doing their bit to help, from marshalling to running stalls and flipping burgers on the BBQ.

"Some of the local village groups including Hawkesbury Parish News and the Hawkesbury Writers group also supported us financially. We are really grateful to all of our supporters especially NWF fuels Yate who were our headline sponsors again this year, also the Renishaws Charities Committee and our very own local Italian restaurant - Flavours of Italy at the Fox in Hawkesbury Upton.

“It's getting more and more popular every year. We are looking forward to doing it all again next year."
