A WELL-used footbridge over a busy Yate road is being closed next week sparking safety concerns for pedestrians.

The bridge over Goose Green Way is a popular route to Brimsham Green School for many pupils and avoids crossing the fast-moving main road.

It is to be closed from Monday, August 3 until at least Friday, August 14 for resurfacing works.

The work, carried out by South Gloucestershire Council, has purposely been planned for the school summer holidays.

Engineer Andrew Clabon, from the council’s department of environment and community services, said: “The work is being undertaken during the school holidays to minimise the impact on children who use the bridge for access to and from school.

“The materials being used to resurface the bridge also cure quicker in warm conditions.”

He said it would not be possible to make the bridge available for use during the evenings or weekends.

Yate town councillor Chris Willmore said: “I know they have to do some repairs but rather than close one side at a time they have to close both at the same time.

“I would not want to walk across that main road.”
