AVON and Somerset’s police headquarters will host the force’s biggest ever public event showcasing the talents of the young people in the region.

The open day, at the constabulary’s command centre in Portishead, will feature budding fashion designers, disabled sports stars, volunteer cadets and future artists with lots of opportunities for visitors to get involved: Members of the public will be invited to join young designers from Creative Youth Network in upcycling old police uniforms into stylish new attire for a fashion show, or volunteer as a model to parade the looks.

Learn about the wonderful world of Bollywood glamour through dance and fitness with Mumtaz Dance Company will hold Bollywood dance and fitness workshops and demonstrations, there will boccia lessons with young stars from Access Sport and an opportunity to create new art and sculptures from rubbish with the LitterARTI project.

In addition, young visitors will be able to drive in a police car, fingerprint their parents and meet police dogs and the horses.

Sarah Crew, Assistant Chief Constable, said: “The open day is a celebration of all that is positive, creative, innovative and talented in the young people of Avon and Somerset.

“We are proud of the talent - the young sportsmen and women, the artists, the performers, the musicians, the volunteers - from every corner of the force."

The event, on Sunday, September 13, will also be a chance for young people to give their views on policing and the crimes they most want the police to tackle. The latest research shows 13 to 18 year-olds think priority issues are child abuse, bullying and sexting, stalking or bullying online.

ACC Crew added: "Alongside the fun activities, we are committed to understanding, being empathetic and ensuring our response to young people is professional.

“We want to hear their views on policing and work in ways that appeal to them, to help keep the next generation of Avon and Somerset safe. In the survey, young people told us they want joint activities with police officers and to talk to us via social media, so these opportunities will be explored."
