NOMINATIONS are mounting up as we search to find our regions’ Pub of the Year 2015.

The Gazette has teamed up with local MPs Luke Hall, who represents Thornbury and Yate, and Stroud MP Neil Carmichael to find three winners in the hotly-contested competition – one in the Dursley area, one in Thornbury and one in the Yate and Chipping Sodbury.

New bar The Horseshoe in Chipping Sodbury is so far leading the way with more nominations than any other pub. Other establishments to have been put forward for the title of Pub of the Year include The Globe in Frampton Cotterell, The Swan at Nibley and The Squire Inn in the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area.

In Thornbury, nominated pubs include The Swan, The Anchor at Oldbury-on-Severn and The Fox at Old Down.

Dursley residents have so far selected The Salutation Inn in Ham near Berkeley as their potential winner.

Readers have until August 31 to nominate their local before shortlist is drawn up of those pubs with the most nominations. There will then be a public vote to find the three winners and the newly-crowned landlords will each be invited to the Houses of Parliament for a day where they can pour a pint and sell their brewery’s beer in the Strangers Bar.

Mr Hall is this week writing to all landlords in the Thornbury and Yate areas to encourage them to get involved with the competition.

Pubs are the lifeblood of many of our local communities and this award is a great way of recognising and celebrating that.

“As a local man myself, I am a great supporter of our pubs and I very much look forward to welcoming the winners of the Pub of the Year competition to the House of Commons and having their local ale served in the bar in parliament.”

Stroud MP Neil Carmichael said: “Local pubs really matter to our communities and there are many very good pubs across the district.

“It will be a difficult task, but it is a fabulous opportunity for pubs to enter this excellent competition, which I have given me support.”
