A TRUE do-gooder, Wendy Mayo was the embodiment of community.

She worked tirelessly for so many causes both professionally and voluntarily.

For years she dedicated herself to raising money for her two children’s schools on the PTA and improving standards as a governor.

She brought Yate’s main community centre into the 21st century and turned it into the hustling hive of activity it is today.

And her work at Dodington Parish Council will leave a lasting legacy. Thanks to her, the parish has a park designated by the Queen and therefore afforded special protection from housing development. There are more allotments available than ever before. A children’s play area has been improved markedly because of her passion for children’s facilities and she helped the council safeguard a park and maintain it to a high standard.

She served for many years as secretary and chairman on various groups and organisations across the local area and at district and county level.

As well as her diligent attitude to clerking, this remarkable and kind lady was always on hand to help and offer advice.

Wendy was a community treasure who we will never forget. No doubt there will be commemorative plaques and benches to come but in the meantime, perhaps a fitting tribute to someone who did so much for the good of Yate and Dodington, would be to simply remember her work and be thankful for it.
