A VILLAGE social club held an open day for new and present members to raise its profile and celebrate the summer.

Wickwar Social Club opened its doors last Saturday (August 15) for a day of fun, competitions, stalls and food and drink.

There was tombola, splat the rat, a raffle, bingo, a drawing contest and table football as well as a summer barbecue and afternoon tea, cake and Pimms.

The event was open to all, members and non-members, and was organised to help promote the social club as a venue and to show newcomers to the village what it has to offer.

Chairman Tim Pooley said: “The day was a great success.

“I think everyone had a really good time and many families attended who hadn't been to the club before, so we certainly achieved our aim of raising the profile of the club within the village.

“We signed up quite a few new members on the day and thanks to the generosity of volunteers and of our neighbours, we also raised quite a meaningful sum of money for the local youth club and the church."
