YOUNG readers at Rangeworthy Primary School have booked their educational future with the opening of a new library.

The school’s old store room has been turned into an indexed library full of fictional and non-fiction sections as well as a computer area, seated work section and a large rug where pupils can look through their chosen books.

The £2,500 project was enabled by Yate and District Rotary Club and Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club which each stumped up £500 towards new furniture and equipment.

Head teacher Janet Dickson said: “It was just a storage area and the children couldn’t really access the books because there were some in this room and some in a classroom and they were on shelves you could not see the spines on.

“It wasn’t organised like a library so children just weren’t using the books, which was such a shame because we have some lovely books.”

She added: “Now they are all organised in categories and children can come in and look up books and chose their reading books. “We have introduced our Reading Spine which is a recommended list of books for the children to read and it has meant we have a big classroom back.

“It has been quite a major project which is important because reading comes before writing.”

John Berridge, from Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club, said: “It is really impressive to see a school take such a good initiative.”

Ken Hopley, from Yate Rotary Club, said: “We are keen to promote the co-operation between the two Rotary clubs and long may that continue.”
