CHIPPING Sodbury’s autumn Mop fair saw bumper crowds as the town was basked in glorious sunshine at the weekend.

The bi-annual fair proved more popular than ever as people flocked to enjoy a selection of children’s attractions and thrilling rides on Friday evening and all day on Saturday.

The Mop, which originates from agricultural hiring fairs held on Chipping Sodbury’s wide medieval High Street since the town was founded in the 12th century by William Crassus, saw Broad Street closed to traffic as rides including the waltzers, dodgems, a Helter Skelter and teacups took over the main thoroughfare.

Town mayor Cllr Paddy Smith, who sits on Sodbury Town Council’s markets committee, said the glorious weather at the weekend had made this Mop fair one of the best.

“It was fantastic,” said Cllr Smith, who took his granddaughter to the fair. “I would say it was one of the biggest crowds they have had.

“It was a brilliant trading day and the people and the children thoroughly enjoyed it.”

He added: “Overall Friday night was a success and Saturday and Saturday night were a complete success all down to the weather.”
