SCHOOLCHILDREN in Chipping Sodbury have left a legacy for future generations to help mark a milestone anniversary.

Pupils at St John’s Mead Primary School filled a time capsule with familiar items from the present day as well as school work, art work and letters. It was buried in the school grounds during an open afternoon on Wednesday (September 23) to mark 25 years since the amalgamation of St John’s Junior School and Painters Mead Infant School.

Head teacher Nicola Berry said: “It was wonderful seeing familiar faces and meeting new ones as former pupils and staff members shared memories over delicious cake, toured the school, listened to the school choir and joined in a wake and shake with music from the 1990s.

“The afternoon concluded with a special trip to our reflection garden where children from all the year groups added photographs and items into our time capsule.

“We invested in a proper metal time capsule and the classes made clay tiles to form a cover for the capsule so we are feeling confident we will be able to find it again in 25 years’ time.”

The capsule was buried by Laura Hamilton who started teaching at Painters Mead in 1982.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, school pupils helped write a new school prayer which was read out for the first time at a harvest festival in St John’s Church on Friday. A barn dance was also held at the school on Friday evening.
