HARVEST is well and truly underway in the Abbotswood area of Yate where the lowly apple was celebrated in all its autumnal glory on Saturday (October 3).

The annual Abbotswood Autumn Apple Day was the biggest and best yet with between 300 and 400 people enjoying free festivities including apple bobbing, the longest apple peel competition and apple pressing.

Organised by local residents and groups in conjunction with Abbotswood Action Group, Jacob’s Well Church and the Wild for Life project, the event also saw children enjoy a bouncy castle and visitors have a go at making jam and willow weaving. A fire engine, police car and Yate-based Hedgehog Rescue were also at the apple day which culminated in entertainment from three local bands.

Ruth Ward, secretary to Abbotswood Action Group, said: “It was highly successful and was our biggest event to date

“I think the highlight was a dog show, which was new for this year, organised by the vets in the area. There were lots of different categories and that drew people in.

“There a nice community atmosphere and we would like to thank all the residents and people who helped organised the day.”

She said it was hoped more people would get involved in organising future community events in the area.
