A PERMANENT tribute to Dodington Parish Council clerk Wendy Mayo has been unveiled.

A plaque in memory of 53-year-old Wendy, who died after a short battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in August, was made public on Saturday (November 14) at the QE11 changing rooms in Kelston Close, Yate.

Wendy’s daughters Caroline, 19, and Rebecca, 17, unveiled the plaque at a ceremony attended by family, councillors, staff and invited guests including South Gloucestershire Council leader Cllr Matthew Riddle and former Thornbury and Yate MP Steve Webb.

As clerk, the refurbishment of the changing rooms was Wendy’s last big project before she became ill. The mother-of-two, who lived in Yate with her husband Derek, was instrumental in securing the refurbishment of the changing rooms and obtaining a grant of £25,000 from the Football Foundation and £7,000 from South Gloucestershire Council’s New Homes Bonus.

The plaque reads: “This building is dedicated to the memory of Wendy Mayo, Dodington Parish Council clerk and true worker for the community.”

Council chairman Cllr Christine Howard said the words on the plaque said it all.

She said: “Wendy was our guiding light.

“She always had the residents of Dodington as her priority and brought the parish council forward in many ways.

“This amazing lady was an integral part of the council and to each of us individually.”

A football match between Dodington FC and Bikkle Sports, which was due to be played after the unveiling, had to be cancelled due to the waterlogged pitch.

However, the entire Dodington team turned out in full kit to the plaque unveiling ceremony in tribute to Wendy.
