LOOKING back on some of the stories the Gazette has reported through the years...

May 1966

STATISTICS submitted by the medical officer of health to a meeting of Thornbury RDC public health committee showed there were 89 births in the month ending April 16, while there were 31 deaths.

The officer proposed increasing awareness of mental disabilities, with Thornbury being suggested to stage a small exhibition on mental health in the entrance hall to the council offices.

KINGSWOOD Parish Council offered part of the village playing field to Dursley RDC to build garages on.

But the RDC’s housing committee, which discussed the idea, was told that only three or four council house tenants would be interested in renting a garage.

SOUTHMEAD Community Hospital heard that health services would suffer throughout Avon because of the drop in the intake of nurses.
Southmead Health District nursing officer Pat Morris said the country would feel the effects of cutting staff over the next three years.

THE Gazette reported there were 85 fatal accidents on farms in England and Wales in 1975, compared with 89 in 1974. More deaths were caused by tractors overturning than any other accidents.

THE future of the public convenience in Quaker Lane, Thornbury, came under discussion after a number of inquiries had been made in acquiring the council-owned site.

Members of Northavon District Council were told in a report that they might feel there were adequate conveniences in the town with the completed automatic facilities in Castle Court car park and the toilets on the Rock Street end of the shopping area.

A YEAR-LONG campaign by Tytherington residents to get a 30mph limit through the village finally paid off as the recommendation was accepted.

Avon County Council’s planning and highways committee heard claims from residents that vehicles “tore” through the village.
