YATE is preparing to bring out the bunting as the town celebrates to mark The Queen’s 90th birthday.

The party takes place on Her Majesty’s official birthday on Saturday, June 11 (2.30-5pm) at St Mary’s Church and St Mary’s Primary School and will be include a fancy dress parade, face-painting, games, singing and a tea party.

The free family fun will be opened by the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter, and other dignitaries will attend including the High Sherriff of Gloucester Countess Bathurst and Cllr Erica Williams, chairman of South Gloucestershire Council.

Yate’s rector Rev Ian Wallace said: “Preparations are underway for the community of Yate to come together to celebrate The Queen’s official birthday and say thank you for her unstinting service to Britain and to the world.

“The street party themed event is free and includes traditional afternoon tea, fancy dress, entertainment for all ages, music and an exhibition. “The event is organised by Yate parish working with Yate Heritage Centre, St Mary’s School and the 1st Yate Scouts and is supported by Yate Town Council.”

St Mary’s School Choir and The Cleeve Singers will perform and children will be invited to make their own crown for the event.

Celebrations continue in Yate the following day, on Sunday, June 12 (12.30-3pm) when Abbotswood Action Group will host a picnic in honour of The Queen’s milestone birthday.

The event, on the green in Abbotswood Shopping Centre or in St Nicholas Family Centre if wet, will also celebrate the local community and its work to improve the area.

There will be a fancy dress parade, both princes and princesses will be welcome, or children can dress in red, white and blue.

Mary Wright, chairman of the action group, said: “There will be lots of games to be played.

“Bring a blanket and picnic with you and maybe a sweet to share with others and come and meet your neighbours in this community activity.”
